UAE Leads Demonstration of Development And Prosperity In Yemen

Emirates contributes in making the future of Yemen, especially in the liberated provinces from al-Huthi militia and the Ousted Saleh. Socotra Island gained more attention from Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed’s Foundation for Humanitarian work and the Red Crescent, which has been implementing a number of projects in the electricity, education, construction, humanitarian relief, security and important development projects.

 

Security sector:

Emirates had trained military batch of Socotra island’s sons of around 2300 in phases for three months in order to create a military cadre of qualified security roles that were wanted there. The Governor of Socotra Archipelago Brigadier Salim Abdullah Alsogatri and the commander of the First Brigade infantry Marine Brig. Gen. Mohammed Al-Sufi estimated the support provided by the UAE Brigade the first marine corps, which is only to protect the archipelago, which will generate a major shift in the armed forces in the Island. It was earlier received a military force of 723 people after participating in a training course in UAE. The Governor praised the great efforts made by the United Arab Emirates for the rehabilitation and training of young people of the island to join armed forces of Yemen in the Socotra province and contribute to secure its coastline by providing them with combat skills that enable them to perform their duties perfectly.

 

Emirates by its representative the Red Crescent Society fortified its efforts in the education sector through the implementation of restoration and rehabilitation of 17 schools in Socotra as first stage project and maintenance of buildings and added new classrooms and provided school buses transport for students in the framework of the agreement signed with the local authorities on the reconstruction of what was destroyed by a hurricane Tshabala and Maj. Also Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed’s Foundation for humanitarian works contributed in the restoration for Al-Zahra Girls High School, which had got heavy damage after hurricanes, as well as it purchased an electric generator for the school, which is the largest on the island with a large number of 1200 students.

 

The Director of the Education office in Hadibo Directorate, Abdulsalam Aljumhi said: “The Education Department on the island is facing a lot of difficulties due to the neglected suffering by it during the past few years, where we have more than 16,000 students with deficits in the schools, teachers and books” praising “the role of the Red Crescent Society of UAE which has offered great attention to the education sector.

 

Humanitarian Relief:

Emirates figured significantly in the attention for the humanitarian aspect and stands by the Yemeni people through the provision of a private emergency humanitarian and relief assistance to the Socotra archipelago, where Khalifa’s Foundation for Humanitarian works contributed by sending more than 20 cargo aircraft and nine ships carrying thousands of tons of relief materials to the Yemeni people, especially to Socotra, which suffered a lot from Hurricanes of Tshabala over the past year 2015. The aircraft carried 12 tons of food , hundreds of tons tents and medicines to help distribute them to more than 25 thousand of affected families.

 

The UAE came in the place of honor in the provision of humanitarian assistance to Yemen, where provided by the UAE AED 744 million, equivalent of 202 million US dollars, until August 2015 and the quantity of the UAE aid over the past year to 430 million dirhams, of which about 190 million AED of saving fuel for electric power and about 110 million dirhams for aid and food as well as AED 80 million for medical aid, AED 30 million for water supply and sanitation and 20 million dirhams for the variety of relief materials.

 

The Fisheries Sector:

The Red Crescent Society of UAE continues to implement a number of development and service projects in the Yemeni island of Socotra to help those who got damaged homes and fishing boats of their own due to hurricanes. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Humanitarian Foundation’s works also contributed in the distribution of fishing boats to the affected people who have lost their only source of livelihood among a number of stages, including the first phase of the distribution of a first installment of 40 boats for fishermen.

 

Reconstruction Sector:

Red Crescent Society of UAE contributes to the implementation of a number of service-projects in Socotra archipelago and private construction projects for a number of vital facilities, where it was signed a private agreement for building residential units in the cities of «Zayed 1» and « Zayed 2» as a first step and it will create 356 housing units solar-powered to alleviate the suffering of the citizens. Also it will build at least 150 houses for affected residents in Abdul Korean island. Emirates re-represented by the UAE Red Crescent Society supported the rehabilitation of 44 mosques in several areas of the province.

 

The General Director of entailing and mentoring Sheikh Rashid Abbas praised the significant role played by the Red Crescent Society in the province for restoration of mosques.

 

Health Sector:

The Emirati institutions and societies has adopted a number of developmental and humanitarian projects to improve the conditions and services and reconstruction, where Khalifa Humanitarian Foundation built Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Hospital in Socotra thousand  that based on 470 square meters and consists of  Men’s and Women’s wings for patients as well as major and junior operation rooms, intensive care room and sections for women, childbirth and premature babies ,emergency device and the requirements of operations and nursing integrated with modern equipment of x-rays along with a large pharmacy.

 

In addition, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Hospital serves a large segment of the population of Socotra and its neighboring areas, which its clinics receive around 123 medical conditions a day, also the women and childbirth’s section receives 55 cases a day.

 

Youth and Sports:

Emirates adopted implementation of a sport projects in the framework of humanitarian and development efforts which were handed a piece of land with an area 1600 meters for the construction of an integrated gym contains all games.

The Youth and Sport Office of the General Federation of Football in Socotra archipelago received several supplies for sport clubs in the province provided by the Khalifa Foundation. General Director of Youth and Sport, Saeed Malik, the head of the Football Federation Ahmed Hzum and leaders of youth and sport clubs praised  the support that Emirates provide together with the Foundation of Khalifa Bin Zayed for humanitarian works especially for the sports sector and the youth in the archipelago.

 

Airport And Seaport Of Socotra Archipelago:

Emirates is implementing several development projects in the Socotra archipelago in the most vital sector which is the airport and the Seaport of Holaf where it is implementing a project to expand the seaport of Holaf by Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Humanitarian Foundation in a duration of work for a year and includes the expansion of the seaport and extending firth to break the waves along 110 meters along with the deepening of the navigation channel. In addition to the implementation of the rehabilitation and restoration of Socotra airport project, where the work has been completed for the runway lighting by solar energy and completed the fencing of the airport. Currently it is also doing restoration work and rehabilitation for the building and the airport tower.

 

As it has been constructed Socotra International Seaport integrated maritime Services and shipping with the support of the UAE in Shaheb area (Garma) to the west of the capital Hdeboh away from Socotra International Airport almost a kilometer.

 

It is worth mentioning that the Khalifa Foundation, which launched the work of expansion and renovation of Socotra Seaport by directions of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and was followed up by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan as well as the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has worked at a high pace in a short period.

 

Rehabilitation Of The Electricity Sector:

In the electricity sector, the UAE had an important and distinct role in finding solutions to the problem of electricity which is suffering from difficulties and urgent solutions. Accordingly the UAE Red Crescent Society has given great attention in the electricity sector by providing Hadiboh station what it needs of fuel to run generators and to re maintain and rehabilitate of the island’s power grid and it sent UAE-professional team that has studied the most important needs of the institution of electricity in the province.
